Why Links and Link Building are So Important!
Links to your site from other sites and from listings of your site's pages in the search engines, whether it be the home page or other pages, will determine whether or not anyone visits your website or blog - unless of course you are driving traffic to your site using pay-per-click.
Links, or more precisely hyperlinks, are the "life blood" of the Internet and with out them there would be no world wide web. The Internet was created from links and without links you would not be reading this right now!

Only just a couple of years ago just getting the largest number of links would have got your site to a top position in the search engines and you would then get the bulk of the traffic for your targeted keyword.
However today that has all changed. Just getting links is not enough. You have to get quality links.

For effective link building you need to get links that have anchor text that is on topic in the context of the content around the link on the web page that is pointing to your site.
This makes that link relevant and as such it gives that link more authority in the eyes of the search engines, especially Google.
This makes that link a quality link and these are the types of links you really, really want.

This may not be something you know, but to be really successful online you should be spending 80% of your time and effort building and getting quality links for your websites. Submitting your web sites home page to web directories is still a very valid and effective way of getting good links to your site, especially if they are niche directories that are relevant to your website or blog.
How effective this type of link building can be will depend on the methods, tools or resources you use to do it. Doing it manually is just too time consuming and fortunately there are many new software tools and other services to help automate this extremely boring task.

Blog Commenting
With the emergence of blogs on the Internet and especially the use of Wordpress to build blogs and now more traditional looking websites (like this one!), the ability to make comments on websites has created a new and very effective way to get back links to your own site or blog.
When you comment on a blog you can leave a link in your name in the comment and even sometimes include links in the body of your comment. Be careful to contribute to the conversation and do not spam in these comments.
If you make comment spam the blog owner, who will be checking your comment before allowing it to be displayed, will just delete your comment and your website might be black flagged, so that when you try to comment on other blogs you comments will be automatically rejected! Do not spam!

Trying to do it manually would require just too much time and energy so like many of the jobs that you need to perform as an Internet marketer here is another one you can automate.

You do have to be careful how you use this tool as it is just so powerful! If you do not take care using it you run the risk of getting your accounts closed and your IP banned as a scammer. In which case all of your hard work will have been in vain!
Contextual Linking Services
The best way to get a quality link is to get a relevant contextual link from a web page, such as a blog post, that is relevant to the niche of the page or site that the link is pointing to. In the previous paragraph the two words 'best links' are a contextual link as they written to flow naturally within the sentence and are in context within the theme of both this section of the text and this whole post. There are various systems out there that will help you do this but most of them are very expensive and hard to join as the doors are often closed.
However there is a new system that has just been announced and if you are quick you should be able to get in. In addition it has the bonus of not being too expensive for most of us. In fact I need to clarify that statement and say that this service is cheap, amazingly cheap considering how you can benefit from it.

High PR Backlinks
The type of link that will have the biggest impact on you rankings in the search engines is a link that comes from a page that has a high Google page rank. Page rank is a Google term and indicates the authority that Google gives to that page in it's ranking algorithm.
To see the page rank of a page in your browser you need to install the Google toolbar for your browser and the Page Rank, or PR as it is often called, will be displayed as a small green bar in the toolbar and indicates a value from 0 to 10. New sites start off at 0 and over time may acquire higher page rank of say 1, 2 or 3.
If you get a PR4 or more for your site then Google is beginning to trust your site as an authority and some of the best sites to get links on are PR5 and PR6 sites , but these are not easy to get.
Firstly because there are not that many sites (or pages) with this page rank compare to the large number of lesser PR sites and also owners of site with high PR like to hang on to it and not give out links to anyone.
A high PR page link has more value than lower PR page links and will have a positive effect on your site even if the link is not relevant or in context. If the link is relevant then the value of that link is much higher.

Forum and Email Signatures
As an Internet marketer you will undoubtedly join many forums and send many emails. You can use targeted anchor text links in your signature for both of these scenarios and these can often prove very successful.
Obviously resist the temptation to spam the forums and put in extra links in your posts as this could lead to you getting banned. Contribute to the forums and members will start to trust you and use your links.
Always make a valid contribution to what is going on and don't try to sell stuff unless it categorically states that you can. Other marketers will quickly see what you are doing and report you!
Email signatures will not get you links, but they may get you traffic and some sales.
Traditional Reciprocal Linking
Swapping links with other websites is still a great way to getting good quality links pointing to your own website. The only slight downside is that you have to reciprocate and give up a link from your own site in return.
These types of links work best if you are running a blog on something like Wordpress, where a link swap in the blogroll of the other site will provide you with many links from the other site as the blogroll often appears on every page.
These are called site wide links and, although many suggest that Google and the other search engines might discount some of these links they still seem to word very effectively.
For these links to carry the most authority make sure you are doing reciprocal linking with a site that is in a similar niche to your own. It does not have to be exactly the same but should definitely be somewhat related.
